Using Salt for Home Cleansing and Protection

Updated: Sep 21, 2023

Using salt for cleansing and protection in the home is a common practice in many spiritual and cultural traditions. Here are some steps to follow:

1. Type of salt: I am going to dispel a myth that has gone around the internet for years and that is that you need to have sea salt or Himalayan salt for cleansing and protection purposes. I have used both successfully and do not find a difference in the level of energy cleansing and protection they offer. Remember, that it is your intention - you are literally working with the spirit of the salt - that matters. Think of it like having a friend who loves to help you out. You can't just stand in front of that friend and expect them to know what to do. You have to say, "Thank you, friend, for giving me a ride to work today." The same goes for spiritual helpers. Say, "Thank you, salt, for protecting my home and its occupants from all harm." This is why you can use herbs, stones and other natural objects for different purposes.

4. Sprinkle salt around your home: Take a small amount of salt and sprinkle it around the perimeter of your home, focusing on doorways, windows, and corners. You can also sprinkle it in areas that feel energetically heavy or stagnant. As you do this, you can recite a prayer or affirmation that aligns with your intention for cleansing and protection. I like to lay a line of salt across my front and back doors. You can place a welcome mat over it if you like.

5. For cleansing purposes, allow the salt to sit: Leave the salt in place for a few hours or overnight, allowing it to absorb any negative energy or unwanted influences. Some people prefer to leave it for a specific period, such as 24 hours or until the next morning. I like to fill a bowl with water and salt, slices lemons or limes and a sprig of rosemary and place the bowl in a room overnight to cleanse the room. I do a fresh bowl for each room.

6. Sweep or vacuum the salt: After the designated time, sweep or vacuum the salt, collecting it along with any debris or negative energy it may have absorbed. Dispose of it outside your home in the trash. If you use the water bowl method, put the herbs and fruit in the trash outside and throw the water against a tree to be absorbed and transmuted into positive energy.

7. Repeat as needed: You can repeat this process as often as you feel necessary, especially during times of heightened stress, after arguments, or when moving into a new space.

Remember, while salt can be a powerful tool for cleansing and protection, it is also important to address the underlying causes of negative energy or influences in your home. Combining salt rituals with other practices like prayer, music, bells, and flowers can enhance the effectiveness of your cleansing and protection efforts.
